THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT

Tuesday, July 1, 2025

The West Gate Tunnel Project is entering into its final stages of works before it opens by the end of 2025.

When the project is complete, drivers will be able to travel to and from the west to the city along the West Gate Freeway via two new tunnels under Yarraville, with new city connections to Footscray Road in Docklands, Dynon Road in West Melbourne or CityLink.

Winter 2025 – finishing works along the West Gate Freeway

To complete works on the outbound tunnel exit, there will be lane and ramp closures from 13 July to late August 2025. During this time crews will continue cladding works on the 50m high outbound tunnel ventilation structure, located between Williamstown Road and Millers Road, and carry out asphalting, kerb and drainage works around the Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp.

We will also continue testing the Freeway Traffic Management System along the Freeway to ensure that when the West Gate Tunnel opens, this state-of-the-art technology is working seamlessly to keep drivers safe and traffic free-flowing.

These works will be carried out in two stages and partially during the winter school holidays to minimise the impact on road users. Delays of up to 30 minutes are expected. There will be on road signage to guide drivers through detour routes.

This is all part of widening the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 through lanes and building new tunnels linking the West Gate Freeway to the city and CityLink to provide an alternative to the West Gate Bridge.
